Different instruments, different force

A restrictive covenant is registered against title and runs with the land. Association bylaws govern the association's internal affairs and members. Condominium bylaws apply within a condominium corporation. Municipal rules apply regardless of any of the above.

This guide is general orientation. Community-specific covenant content in Calgary has not yet been verified against primary sources in this dataset.

What to verify

  • Whether any restrictive covenant is registered on the specific title.
  • Whether an architectural control or approval process applies before fencing, landscaping or exterior changes.
  • Which body enforces which rule.
